Why I am restarting my newsletter (and a few lessons for yours)
Years ago, I started a newsletter because it was the smart thing to do.
If you have an online business, you have probably driven leads to a lead magnet before.
If they didn’t convert, most businesses just let them go cold.
I wouldn’t be one of the businesses.
So I started a newsletter that I would drop any lead that came through.
At one point, I had thousands of people in that newsletter.
The problem was that very few of them were actually engaged.
Could it be because most of them came in from my toolbox, and now most of my emails were talking about self-improvement?
Maybe.
Honestly, the biggest problem was that I was half-assing the writing.
Most of the emails were just repurposed from videos I had done or, at the worst, ChatGPT.
It was a trash newsletter because I never gave it attention.
So I did what anyone would do (maybe not anyone I am crazy about).
I emailed everyone on my list and told them I’m done and starting fresh with a new newsletter.
Now instead of thousands of subscribers, I have 2.
But at least I know the two that I have are engaged and actually wanting to hear what I have to say.
Here’s what I plan to do to make sure it continues to grow and with the right people:
Stay focused on one outcome.
Don’t get me wrong, I will be talking about many different things in this newsletter.
From mindset to business strategies to family. But all that I talk about will be in an effort to shed light on enrolling.
Enrolling more clients into my readers’ businesses or maybe enrolling the reader in their own goals.
The point will be enrollment.
Post more regularly.
In the past, I posted just one time per week, and I had about 100 emails pre-set ready to go.
The problem is things change. What I said last week often times isn’t how I feel about it today, and if I don’t communicate that more often, how will anyone know?
Now let’s get something straight. If you’re using a newsletter for a long-term nurture, there’s nothing wrong with pre-scheduled emails. I, in fact, recommend this to most businesses.
I personally want the more in-real-time thoughts.
Make the newsletter the flagship offer.
I have a lot to offer potential clients:
Downloads
Courses
Workshops
Done for you
It’s a lot, and no one wants to click through a bunch of shit to figure out what is right for them.
So the simple thing is just to subscribe to the newsletter.
People can figure out what makes sense for them and even better decide on their own if I am even the person they want to work with.
At the end of the day,
Starting fresh can be a little scary.
Many times I have thought this week, “Am I dumb?”
The answer is probably, but I am also more excited than I have been in a long time.
